Keith Shadis finds Grisha, apparently amnesiac, outside Shiganshina and brings him inside the Walls. The doctor cures an epidemic, marries Carla, a barmaid at the inn, and in 835 Eren is born.

The Beast holder, Tom Ksaver, becomes young Zeke's friend and mentor: they play catch and talk about ending the Eldians' suffering. Zeke inherits the Beast and their dream: a world without Eldians.

In the Underground City Kenny finds his sister Kuchel dead and her son Levi still alive beside her. He teaches him how to use a knife and survive, then leaves him without saying who he is.

Erwin Smith captures Levi, Isabel and Farlan in the Underground City, who handle the omni-directional mobility gear like veterans, and forces them into the Survey Corps. The trio accepts in order to kill him on a noble's commission.

The expedition in the rain
In the fog and rain an expedition beyond the Walls ends in a massacre: Levi breaks away to kill Erwin, and on his return finds Isabel and Farlan devoured. He slaughters the Titans and chooses to follow Erwin: "Don't regret your choices".

Eren saves Mikasa
In 844 three traffickers kill Mikasa's parents to sell her, because she descends from Hizuru. Nine-year-old Eren kills two of them; Mikasa, at his cry of "Fight!", awakens and kills the third. Eren wraps his scarf around her neck; the Yeagers take her in.

The Warriors land on Paradis
In 845 Marley lands Reiner, Bertolt, Annie and Marcel on Paradis. On the first night a pure Titan attacks: Marcel pushes Reiner aside and is devoured. Reiner, Bertolt and Annie flee, letting it take the Jaw away.

Ymir becomes human again
The Titan that devours Marcel is Ymir, a Marleyan girl used by a cult as a fake "reincarnation" of Ymir Fritz and then exiled: after sixty years as a pure Titan, she becomes human again with the power of the Jaw.

After a hundred years of peace, a skinless head rises above Wall Maria: the Colossal Titan (Bertolt) kicks in Shiganshina's outer gate, and the Titans pour into the district.

A boulder from the gate crushes the Yeager house, trapping Carla. Hannes arrives, but faced with the Smiling Titan he chooses to carry the children away: Eren watches his mother being devoured.

As refugees crowd the inner gate, the Armored Titan (Reiner) charges through it, rendering the defence useless: Wall Maria is lost and a third of humanity's territory falls.

Grisha steals the Founder
That same day Grisha reaches the Reiss family's underground chapel and asks Frieda to use the Founder. When she refuses he transforms, devours her and kills the family. Only Rod survives.

In the woods inside Wall Rose, Grisha injects his son with the serum. Eren, turned into a Titan, devours him and inherits the Attack Titan and the Founder, remembering none of it.

To ease the famine, the government sends 250,000 refugees — 20% of the population — to retake Wall Maria. Almost none return; among the dead is Armin's grandfather.

In 847 Eren, Mikasa and Armin enlist. On the first day Shadis yells in the recruits' faces; Sasha eats a potato in front of him and runs until she drops.

Eren's harness
Eren cannot keep his balance on the harness and risks being expelled. The next day he holds his balance for a moment despite a faulty belt: Shadis passes him, remembering his parents.

In 850 the class graduates. The top ten: Mikasa, Reiner, Bertolt, Annie, Eren, Jean, Marco, Connie, Sasha, Krista. Eren announces he will join the Survey Corps; Jean wants the comfortable life of the Military Police.

The Colossal Titan returns at Trost
The day after graduation, while Eren and his comrades are on duty on the Walls, the Colossal reappears, destroys the fixed cannons and breaches Trost's gate. Eren faces it alone; the Titan vanishes into steam.

In the middle guard Eren's squad is decimated: Thomas is devoured, Mina and the others fall. Eren loses a leg saving Armin from a Titan's mouth, and is swallowed.

Reeves's cart blocks the gate
As the Titans advance, Dimo Reeves blocks the inner gate with a cart loaded with his goods to save them, trapping the civilians. Mikasa forces him to clear it with a threat.

Retaking the supply depot
Out of gas, the recruits are trapped. An abnormal Titan that kills other Titans — Eren — clears the way; Armin's plan lets them retake the depot: seven recruits shoot the Titans' eyes and Mikasa, Annie, Reiner, Bertolt, Jean, Connie and Sasha finish them off.

Eren emerges from the Titan's nape before his comrades' eyes. Captain Woermann treats him as an enemy and orders fire: Eren shields himself with a partial transformation; Armin persuades the newly arrived Pixis.

Following Pixis's plan, Eren in Titan form carries a huge boulder to the outer gate, escorted by Rico, Ian and Mitabi's squads. After an initial loss of control, he succeeds: Rico's flare announces humanity's first victory.

Marco's death
During the district clean-up Jean finds Marco's half-eaten body; nobody saw how he died. Later it emerges that Reiner, Bertolt and Annie stripped him of his gear because he had overheard them.

Before Zackly's military tribunal, the Military Police wants Eren dissected, the Survey Corps wants him to retake Wall Maria. Levi beats him in front of everyone to prove he can control him: Eren goes to Erwin.

The Survey Corps sets out from Karanes in the Long-Distance Scouting Formation. An intelligent female-shaped Titan wipes out the right flank, hunts for Eren and leaves Armin alive after looking him in the face.

Erwin lures the Female Titan into the Forest of Giant Trees and pins it with dozens of harpoons. But she hardens her nape and, with a scream, calls the Titans to devour her body: the shifter escapes.

The Female Titan chases Eren through the forest: Gunther, Eld, Petra and Oluo die one after another. Eren transforms, loses the fight and is taken in its mouth; Levi and Mikasa snatch him back from the fleeing enemy.

Armin unmasks Annie, a military policewoman in Stohess, and sets a trap while Eren is summoned to the capital. Annie transforms in the middle of the district: her fight with Eren devastates the city.

Mike Zacharias stays behind to buy time for his men. A furry Titan that speaks — the Beast — asks him what the mobility gear is, then orders the Titans to devour him.

Besieged in the castle, the unarmed recruits and Nanaba and Gelgar's soldiers hold out against the Titans. To save Krista, Ymir transforms into a Titan in front of everyone and fights until she collapses.

Reiner and Bertolt reveal themselves
On the Walls, as if talking about the weather, Reiner confesses to Eren that he is the Armored Titan and Bertolt the Colossal. Mikasa wounds them, but they transform: after a fight with Eren, they kidnap him and Ymir.

Eren's rescue
Erwin leads the Survey Corps and the Military Police to the Forest of Giant Trees, where Reiner and Bertolt wait for nightfall. In the melee he loses his right arm; then he drags a horde of Titans onto the Armored to free Eren.

The Smiling Titan that devoured Carla reappears and devours Hannes before Eren and Mikasa's eyes. In despair, Eren strikes the Titan's fist and awakens the Coordinate for the first time: the Titans obey him and swarm the enemy.

Pastor Nick, who had revealed Historia's name to Hange, is found dead in Trost: the Central Military Police tortured him without him breaking his vow. It is the sign that the government is ready to kill.

Kenny and the anti-personnel squad attack Levi in a Trost tavern. Rooftop chase, pistols against blades: the new Levi Squad kills humans for the first time, but Eren and Historia are kidnapped.

The murder of Dimo Reeves
Dimo Reeves agrees to help Levi against the government and is killed by the Central Military Police, who blame the Survey Corps. His son Flegel, having escaped, testifies to the truth in public.

The coup d'état
Erwin, arrested and sentenced, has himself brought before the king. Zackly, Pixis and the Survey Corps topple the government without bloodshed, with proof of the nobles' crimes and the revelation that the king was a puppet.

Rod Reiss shows Historia Frieda's memories and asks her to devour the chained Eren to take back the Founder. Historia refuses and hurls the syringe away. Eren drinks the "Armor" serum, transforms and holds up the collapsing cavern with hardening.

Mortally burned by Rod's Titan, Kenny tells Levi about Uri and his dream, says everyone is "a slave to something" and leaves him the serum that could have saved him.

Levi weaves through the Beast's Titans and cuts Zeke to pieces in seconds. He is about to finish him off when the Cart Titan (Pieck) carries him away.

To defeat the Colossal, Armin clings to its nape and withstands the scalding steam until he is burned to a crisp, so that Bertolt focuses on him and not on Eren hidden in his Titan. Eren surprises him and rips Bertolt from the nape.

The sea
With Wall Maria's territory cleared of Titans, the Survey Corps reaches the coast. Armin, who dreamed of the sea as a child, sees it for the first time. Eren points to the horizon: "Beyond the sea are our enemies".

A Marleyan ship docks at the island: the Survey Corps captures the crew. Among the prisoners are Yelena and Onyankopon, who reveal themselves as Zeke's followers: they offer help, technology and a plan to save Paradis.

Kiyomi Azumabito
At Zeke's invitation Kiyomi Azumabito, Hizuru's ambassador, arrives on Paradis. She recognises Mikasa as the shogun's descendant and offers an alliance: in exchange she wants the island's resources, iceburst stone above all.

Yelena lays out Zeke's plan: combine his royal blood with Eren's Founder to control the power, and use the Rumbling as a deterrent for fifty years. The government is wary; Eren stays silent — and is already thinking of something else.

The railway and the harbour
In three years the Volunteers teach Paradis the world's technology: a modern harbour and the first railway are built, linking the coast to the heart of the Walls. Niccolo cooks for the Survey Corps and falls for Sasha.

In 853 Eren, Mikasa, Armin and the others visit a Marleyan city incognito with Kiyomi. They discover the world's hatred for the Eldians of Paradis. Eren splits from the group and disappears: he goes to meet Zeke.

The battle of Fort Slava
After four years of war against the Mid-East Allied Forces, Marley attacks the fortress. Gabi blows up the armoured train, the airships drop pure Titans onto the fortress, the Armored and the Jaw storm it and the Beast sinks the enemy fleet. Marley wins.

Return to Liberio
The Warriors come home by train. In Liberio Gabi's family celebrates; Falco, in love with her, resolves to outdo her and inherit the Armored in her place, to save her from Reiner's fate.

At the military hospital Falco befriends a wounded soldier who calls himself Kruger and entrusts him with his letters "for his family". It is Eren, and the letters are messages for the Survey Corps.

Willy Tybur, head of the family that holds the War Hammer, agrees with Magath: at the festival before the world's representatives he will declare war on Paradis, knowing it may draw the Survey Corps in.

Reiner and Eren in the basement
Falco leads Reiner to a basement beneath the festival stage: Eren is waiting for him. While Willy speaks above, Reiner confesses everything and asks to be killed. "I'm the same as you," Eren replies.

Before the world's representatives, Willy Tybur tells the true story of the Great Titan War, reveals that the king of the Walls wanted peace and that Eren Yeager stole it, and declares war on Paradis.

A Yeagerist bomb kills Supreme Commander Zackly. Floch and his followers take control of part of the army; Eren breaks out and heads to Shiganshina to meet Zeke.

Sasha's parents, Gabi and Falco gather at Niccolo's restaurant. Niccolo reveals that the wine served to the army's leaders contains Zeke's spinal fluid; he discovers that Gabi killed Sasha and attacks her. Falco has already drunk some.

Zeke's betrayal
In the Forest of Giant Trees Zeke screams: Levi's soldiers, who had drunk the wine, turn into Titans. Levi kills them all and leaves Zeke half dead, strapping a Thunder Spear to him. Zeke pulls the pin.

In a Shiganshina restaurant Eren meets Armin and Mikasa in front of the Yeagerists and wounds them with words: he calls Mikasa a slave to her Ackerman instinct and tells Armin he has always hated him. Armin hits him; Eren knocks him down.

Marley's airships swoop on Shiganshina. Zeke, still alive, screams: the soldiers who had drunk the wine — Pixis, Nile and Falco included — turn into Titans. Colt dies holding his transformed brother.

As Eren runs towards Zeke, Gabi decapitates him with the anti-Titan rifle. In the instant before death, Eren's head touches Zeke's hand: the Paths open.

In the Paths Zeke takes Eren through their father's memories to 'cure' him of his brainwashing. But it is Eren guiding the journey: Grisha hesitates before the Reiss family, and his son from the future pushes him to kill.

At the Coordinate Zeke asks Ymir to make the Eldians sterile. Eren, freed from his chains, runs to her and tells her she is not a slave: she can choose. Ymir chooses him.

Around a fire in the forest, the soldiers of Paradis and the Warriors of Marley face one another for the first time: Hange, Armin, Mikasa, Jean, Connie, Levi, Annie, Reiner, Pieck, Magath. The guilt pours out, then they decide to fight together.

The Alliance storms Paradis's harbour, held by the Yeagerists, to seize the Azumabito ship. Magath and Shadis stay behind and blow up the Marleyan warship so that no one can follow them.

Odiha: Hange's death
At Odiha the Azumabito mechanics prepare the flying boat as the first Colossals arrive from the sea. Hange hands Armin command of the Survey Corps and flies alone to meet the Titans to buy time for take-off.

The battle on the Founder's back
Above Fort Salta the Alliance leaps from the flying boat onto the Founder. Ymir summons the Titans of dead holders from the Paths — Ksaver, Porco, Bertolt, Marcel — and a second scream transforms the world's soldiers gathered below.

Levi keeps his promise
Zeke, persuaded by Armin, emerges from the Founder's nape and calls out to Levi. Levi beheads him, keeping the promise he made to Erwin: the Colossals stop.

Mikasa's choice
Eren transforms one last time into a Titan like Ymir's worm. Armin detonates the Colossal against him; Mikasa enters its mouth and beheads Eren, then kisses his head. Ymir, watching her, is finally free of her love for the king.

The Titans vanish
With Eren's death the power of the Titans vanishes from the world: those who had been transformed become human again, the Curse of Ymir ends. The Rumbling has stopped after killing 80% of humanity.

The peace envoys
Three years later Armin, Annie, Reiner, Jean, Connie, Pieck, Gabi, Falco and Levi sail back to Paradis as the Alliance's ambassadors to negotiate with Queen Historia. Mikasa visits Eren's grave every day, beneath the tree on the hill.

The tree on the hill
The final pages span the years: Mikasa grows old beside Eren's grave, Paradis modernises, then is bombed in a new war. Long after, a boy finds the tree grown over the grave, as huge as Ymir's.
